Whenever I think of Makar Sankranti, my mind immediately travels to kites, gajak, til gud ladoos. People all over India eagerly wait for this mid January holiday when you can stuff your faces with til ke ladoos and fly as many kites as you want. Sankranti denotes a fresh start, a new harvest season and end of the winter solstice. Interestingly, Makar Sankrant is the only Hindu festival in which women wear black coloured clothes. Sankrant is considered to be the last day of the winter, presumably the coolest. Black clothes help in absorbing heat and keep warm.
